Ghost River Walk: Walmgate & River Foss

A handmade book of poems and photographs was written to accompany a walk along the banks of the River Foss.  The walk starts at the National Centre of Early Music, Walmgate, York.  The NCEM is the former church of St Margaret’s, which used to own one of three landings which accessed the River Foss.  The walk continues along Walmgate cutting right through Straker’s Passage and Wesley Place to join the River Foss at Foss Landing.  It is possible from this point onwards to walk North, along the banks of the River Foss.  The walk ends at Grange House, now a York St John University Hall of Residence, which was formerly York Workhouse.  All poems and photographs are by Rachel Perry.  There are also writings contributed by former York St John students Rosie Carr and Ben Hill.  The history of this part of York, a former slum area is usually overlooked and is woven round the River Foss.
